Farts for the Arts is my contribution to the 1/many project by John Pedder.
What is 1/Many? In John's own words: As ever with this ‘I/ Many’ you make something, trust me absolutely anything, and then you offer it up on your account for free on the understanding that when your recipient receives your ‘absolutely anything’ they decide what they might have paid for it and give that amount or something they can afford to a good cause of their choosing. There are no judging panels or resume requests, if you’re up for it, then you are most welcome to join in.
Why Farts for the Arts? Mostly because I’m childish. But also because we often hear that people don’t give a 💩 about the arts, or things that are handmade, or (the list of things that people don't give a 💩 about is nearly endless). This mini poster / postcard is a reminder that deep down people probably give at least a fart for the arts.
What is it, exactly? Hand-inked, hand-printed metal and wood type. Each print has two or three colours applied in layers and plays with The Principles of Viscosity to give a layered effect. It’s time-consuming and virtually impossible to get multiples from…officially making these postcards/ mini posters “bad printing”.
How does it work? You "order" the print (zero cost!) from here. I send you this mini-poster (for free) and you donate what you might have paid for the work to your favourite charity. There’s no 1/Many police who check up on you to see if you’ve made a donation: it’s all on the honour system.
Nitty Gritty Details about the Mini Poster / Postcard:
Founts: Penny Farthing from Type High Design (wood) and vintage metal type (Gill Sans 24pt bold)
Ink: Hawthorn Printmakers in a few different shades, including a custom mix; the "top" colour is also mixed with their reducing jelly so that it can be layered more easily
Size: A6 size - 10.5 x 14.8 cm
Paper: 280gsm, recycled paper made at Frogmore Paper Mill in Apsley, England.
Details: Each print is signed. They are numbered as "1/Many"; however, there were fewer than 30 made, and each one is unique.
Shipping: Items will be sent 1st class Royal Mail with a stamp (no tracking). It will be sent in an envelope so you can send it on to someone else as a postcard, or keep it for yourself. (There's probably a "you might like to add a frame" option. Please don't feel obligated to add a frame. I just can't figure out how to unselect this option for mini-posters. 😅)
Limit of one per person. Please don't bump the number up, it'll mess with our counting, and we'll only send you one anyway.
But seriously, what's the catch? There is no catch.
Can't I pay you something? Nope. You pay the charity, not me. That's how 1/Many works.
