Dartmoor Oak

Oak gall ink has recorded history for centuries — used to sign treaties, and to write some of the oldest surviving manuscripts in Europe. Each piece in this collection begins the same way: with ink made from oak galls, the marble-like growths formed when a wasp lays its eggs inside an oak branch. Ours are gathered from oaks on the high moor of Dartmoor.

The largest works pair this ink with letterpress text exploring oak's long relationship with the moor — hand-set in metal and wood type, printed on our historic Dartmoor presses.

Each specimen is an original work on handmade Barcham Green paper, watermarked RWS 1981. No reproductions are made.
