Minis

A small collection of one-off pieces made from oak galls foraged on Dartmoor and evocative of the hills from whence they came.

The work is made in small batches on long strips. First, a layer of unmodified oak gall ink is applied, then a pipette of iron II sulphate. The two combine to make traditional iron gall ink -- an ink that is considered "permanent" as it will remain unchanged for more than one hundred years. Below the "mountain" of iron gall ink, a strip of stannous chloride (tin). A nod to the industrial tin mining history of Dartmoor. Above, a sprinkle of stars (or snowflakes) made from grains of citric acid. Together, the chemistry is evocative of the hills of Dartmoor from which the colour is foraged. Each piece is unique.

This collection represents our lowest environmental impact (and perhaps our highest visual impact).

The paper is handmade by Barcham Green around 1983 (the mill is no longer in operation) and watermarked with RWS (Royal Watercolour Society). The pieces were all made on the backs of misprinted works. The vintage paper is simply too good to waste.

The glass is 92% ArtGlass. A very high standard that is nearly invisible and blocks most UV light, ensuring the longest life for your piece. The glass and the frames are all offcuts from our framer -- too small for most pieces but exceptionally high quality. Again, too good to waste. (A shocking amount of offcuts from the framing industry go directly to landfill. This collection helps to keep short strips of frames from going to landfill.)
