Heritage craft letterpress printing - private workshop in Devon, England
At our studio, you will create hand-set, hand-printed items with heritage letterpress techniques. If you've never set foot in a print studio we will coach you through each of the steps needed to make beautifully printed items. Whether you are drawn to fine printing of precise multiples or to one-of-a-kind-textured-filled one-offs, we can help you achieve the aesthetic you are looking for.
Before your workshop, we'll have a short call on Zoom to talk through your plans for the workshop. No matter what project you choose, we'll teach you the basics of letterpress printing and introduce you to our favourite studio processes for dealing with overwhelm and decision paralysis.
It really is okay if you've never printed anything before. Most of our students are first-timers at the press. We'll walk you through everything you need to know (and leave out the stuff you don't need to know).
WHAT CAN I PRINT? You will have full access to our wood and metal type. We are also able to print wood engravings and lino cuts that you have made, and set them alongside text. Our workshop specialises in heritage craft techniques and British-made recycled papers. This means, we use a light impression with virtually no debossing to ensure the longevity of our type. If you need to make a deep impression, we might not be what you're looking for. Please reach out and we can have a chat!
HOW MANY WORDS CAN I PRINT? The metal type trays are laid out in a non-alpha order (like a QWERTY keyboard, but different). This takes a little getting used to. In our experience, beginners are able to set and print about 50 words per half day. In other words, in a one-day workshop, expect to print one or two posters, or one short poem. Once you're set up, the printing is generally "quick".

The workshop is open to everyone, however, there is not an accessible toilet on-site. Participants under the age of 18 will probably benefit from having an older family member or guardian present. The presses are designed to be used while standing, and there is limited seating. Please get in touch if you like to talk through any accommodations that might improve your experience in the studio, or if you have any other questions or concerns about the workshop or facilities.

All of our papers are recycled, and British where possible. We can provide you specific details on certifications each paper has, and the mill where they were made.
