Stonechat chatter - Wild Colour Specimen of Willow
Stonechats are a regular on my dailyish Dartmoor walk. It is their white collar that I notice initially, the wind often too loud to initially hear their chatter. But as they lead me up the fence line, chatting, I'll catch the distinct tap-tap-tap. As the name implies, their call sounds like two small rocks being tapped together. Almost impossible to believe when described, but unmistakeable when heard.
The wild colour ink for this print is from the storm-damaged willow tree behind the village pub. Several of the willow trees snapped under the weight of the snow, and we were able to take several of the broken branches from the side of the path for ink making. I haven’t been able to determine which willow it is. There are over 300 species, and they interbreed, giving most botanists cold sweats when asked to identify, with certainty, which willow it was. As such, the science name is listed as Salix sp. The "sp.", denoting this ink is from a single, unknown, species.

From environmental science to artistic expression, our work is deeply rooted in our adopted home of Dartmoor. Each piece begins outdoors with the foraging journey and combines our passion for nature with the precision of letterpress and the experimental chemistry of wild colours.
