Hawthorn Broadsheet
This A4 letterpress broadsheet gathers all four passages about hawthorn that appear across our largest collection pieces — botany, history and etymology, folklore, and ink-making — into a single elegant reference sheet. A broadsheet is a large sheet printed on one side, traditionally used for proclamations, news, and educational texts, making it an ideal format for displaying the complete natural and cultural story of one of Britain's most storied hedgerow trees.
Hand-set in metal type and printed on our 1910 vintage treadle press. The text traces hawthorn's botany (its thorns, white flowers, pink anthers, and winter-bright haws), its Old English roots as hagedorn or hedgethorn, its appearance in the Dartmoor prehistoric pollen record during the elm decline some 5,000 years ago, and its rich folklore as both the May tree of spring festivities and the spiritual tree of the faeries. The hawthorn is also known as the pixie pear. It also describes how we make our hawthorn ink each autumn from ripe haws, drawing greys, blacks, oranges, pinks, and purples from a single tannin-rich fruit.
