Call of the Cuckoo at Pixie Rock - Wild Colour Specimen of Nettle
The elusive cuckoo is a regular summer visitor to the high moors of Dartmoor. We usually hear its call south and east of Princetown, sometimes, we even hear it from our bedroom window. Pixie Rock is a specific boulder near Hart Tor, just south of Princetown, and in one of the valleys where we've heard the unmistakable cuck-oo-cuck-oo.
The plant used for this specimen, nettle, is a marvellous plant. It can be spun and used to make fabric, you can make paper out of it, it's a nutritious super-food, and, obviously, it can also be used as a dye. Its only drawback is that it needs a little care during harvest. Victor Hugo has some wonderful things to say about nettles, nestled in the pages of Les Miserables. It’s worth searching for the quote, even if you don’t choose to read the entire book.
About the Print
Each wild colour specimen (100mm x 100mm) is also elegantly letterpress printed onto handmade watercolour paper using traditional techniques that date back centuries. The finished piece is professionally framed to approximately 230mm x 320mm.
This exact specimen will never be reproduced.
From environmental science to artistic expression, our work is deeply rooted in our adopted home of Dartmoor. Each piece begins outdoors with the foraging journey and combines our passion for nature with the precision of letterpress and the experimental chemistry of wild colours.
All of our papers are recycled, and British where possible. We can provide you specific details on certifications each paper has, and the mill where they were made.
